Frank Sgro Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Frank Sgro of Chicago, Illinois announces his passing on January 16, 2025. Frank was born in Calabria, Italy on September 29, 1942. He immigrated to the United States as a young teenager. At the age of 16 he began working as a busboy at the Italian Village Restaurant in downtown Chicago working his way up to waiter followed by captain before earning the position of maître d’. He served in the US Army from 1962 until he was honorably discharged in 1964. He spent 56 years working at the Italian Village and he entertained the likes of Luciano Pavarotti, Frank Sinatra, George Clooney, eight Chicago mayors and many other local, national and international celebrities. Upon his retirement on March 1, 2015, he was awarded the National Restaurant Association Living Legend Award which honored “exceptional members who have committed their lives to enriching Illinois’ cuisine and culture”. He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, visiting family in Italy and in recent years his daily long walks through Lincoln Park. Frank is survived by his loving wife Andrea Covelli. He was preceded in death by his parents Orlando and Fausta, his sister Teresa (Michele) and sister Nella. Frank is survived by his sisters Rosetta (Attilio, deceased), Dina (Vito), brothers Joseph (Rita), Antonio (Laura), Aldo (Laura), sister-in-law Marilyn Lowney, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial Services will be private.
