George Thaddeus Kopicki was born on the west side of Chicago in April 1940 to his parents Gerald and Eugenia. He grew up playing and eventually working around the funeral home his father and grandfather built at 17th and Ashland. The Kopicki’s were members of St. Pius V Church where his family would attend mass. While living in the “old neighborhood” he met his wife Dorothy who lived only a few doors down from him. Dorothy and George had two children together Kevin, the eldest, Eugenia "Jeannie" and later adopted a third child, the late Gerald “Jerry’. George at 28 purchased the Kopicki Funeral Home and Livery Service in Pilsen from his father Gerald in 1968. He developed this entity into a thriving business employing 50 full and part-time employees. His business operated twelve hearses, four limousines and two 24 hour radio dispatched emergency service vehicles. At one time he serviced as many as 60 individual funeral homes with livery and embalming services. In the 70’s and 80’s George built flower cars for their own and other funeral homes to use. In 1974, George purchased Herron & Sons Funeral Home in the historic Depot District of Berwyn. He renamed the funeral home to "Heritage" which incorporates a more appropriate name for the community. In 1984 the Heritage Funeral Home location expanded and remodeled once again to include private parking, three beautifully appointed chapels, facilities for the handicapped, and a casket selection room. George decided to further expand, remodel and update the facilities. Always with an eye on expansion, in 1984 he purchased Parkwyn Funeral Home and in 2000 he expanded the business boundaries by adding cremation facilities and equipment to the Parkwyn facility. In 2011, he also purchased Tower Home For Funerals where he would make his home in Lyons.
