On November 4, 1934, O.C. “Sonny” Jones, Jr. was the first of nine children born to O.C. Sr. and Rosie Lee Jones “Big Momma”, in the small town of Mattson, Mississippi. Sonny gave his life to Christ at an early age. He later became a Deacon and devoted servant to Mount Zion Baptist Church on Chicago’s Westside. In 1955, Sonny was united in marriage in Jonestown, Mississippi to his first wife Dorothy Mae Green. To this union nine children were born. After moving his family to Chicago, Sonny began working for the Wm. Wrigley Company where he was a faithful employee for 31 years before retiring in 1996. In 1976, Sonny and Frankie Mae Johnson “Martha” were united in marriage in Chicago, IL. To this union, four children were born. Sonny enjoyed spending his free time traveling to local casinos and to Las Vegas with family and friends. He also liked to go to the horse racetrack and even the dog tracks. He was also somewhat of an outdoorsman and loved to fish and take fishing trips to the Ozarks, Kentucky Lake, Wisconsin, Minnesota and of course Mississippi with his family and friends. Another one of Sonny’s favorite past times was watching his baseball team the Chicago Cubs. If he couldn’t watch, he would listen to the game on the radio. Sonny enjoyed spending time with his siblings playing competitive bid whiz. They would often gather on Sundays after church for dinner and fun. His love for cooking was like no other. This is something that he passed down to his children. Throughout his life, he would make trips to Mississippi to visit family and his children until he became too ill to do so. Sonny leaves to cherish his memory his children Earline Hudson (Rod); Ann Jones; O.C. III (Angela); Linda Singleton, Ernestine Jones (Henry), Renee McCray (Jessie); Stacey Jones (Tracy), Milton Johnson (Tonia), Tricia Taylor, Earl Johnson, and Barbara Johnson aka Bam. His siblings Sam Jones (Ernestine); Katie Jones (Josh); Curtisteen “Sister” Davis, Roberta Walker (Benny) and Eddie Lee Jones (Gloria) and his special lady Queen Braggs. He was preceded in death by his two daughters, Barbara Shorter and Sylvia Green; ex-wives Frankie Mae and Dorothy Mae, siblings Lucille Matthews and Ralph Jones. Sonny received his heavenly wings in the morning hours on March 20, 2024. His sister Rosie Mae Swinney (Romae) followed him in death later that night on March 20, 2024. Sonny was adored by his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends who all loved him dearly. He will truly be missed.
