Patrick "Pat" Costello

Patrick (Pat) Costello passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 5 after a short illness.  A 60-year resident of Berwyn, he was born in Chicago, IL on March 20, 1927, to William and Frances (nee Earhardt) Costello.   Pat was 99+ years young at his death.    

Patrick was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Mildred (Millie) (nee Hanzlik) and siblings James, Thomas and John Costello, and Lucille (John) Thompson.  Patrick so loved his parents; and helped to care for his mother Frances with the help of his brothers until her passing at 96 years old.

He is survived by his two children, daughter Patricia (Phil) Bajek and son James.  Our hearts are broken in losing our father.  He was and is the best dad ever. 

Patrick loved and cherished his grandchildren Erika (Michael) Fitzgerald, Christopher (Kristin) Bajek, Michael Bajek, Lauren (Jarad) Holmes, and Rebecca Bajek, as well as his great-grandchildren Lillian (Lily) and Ethan Bajek.  He was affectionately called Papa and will be deeply missed. 

Patrick was part of ‘the Greatest Generation’, a Navy veteran of WWII who served on a minesweeper, the USS YMS-2. He enjoyed travelling to gatherings with other veterans as part of the Naval Mine Warfare Association.  After the war, he remained at sea as an Able Bodied Seaman (AB) with the Merchant Marine.  Pat shared many stories of these destinations and adventures with his family.

Patrick held many skilled positions over the course of his career which included work as a battery man building car batteries, and time at Meister Brau Brewery and Walgreens.  He was always ready and willing to help his family and others with any project.  He took great pride in the tuckpointing and wood refinishing that he did himself on his Berwyn home, as well as performing maintenance on his many vehicles over the years including the legendary Ford Pinto.

Patrick was physically active throughout his life and especially enjoyed taking long walks and lifting weights to keep fit.   Pat was always interested in what was going on in politics, enjoyed watching baseball games and an occasional episode of Columbo.        

There will never be another man like Patrick, but our fond memories and love for him remain.  He is now at rest and home with our heavenly Father, all of the Angels and Saints, and with our dearly departed who have gone before him. 

Visitation for Patrick will be Wednesday, August 12 from 3-8 pm with a prayer service at 10:00 am Thursday, August 13, both at Heritage Funeral Home located at 3117 Oak Park Ave, Berwyn, IL.  Burial will take place at Mary Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL.
