Richard Toman Obituary

Richard Frank Toman was born in Chicago on May 31, 1938. Beloved husband of 43 years to Sandra (Crone); loving father of Ralph (Karen) and Michael J (Tammy); dear stepfather of Wendy Jones and Debra Greening; fond grandfather of steven (Lina) Horejs; Chase (Kenhya) Horejs, Dakota Horejs, Jacob Greening and the late Rebecca Greening; great grandfather of many. He grew up in Berwyn where his formative years were spent like a typical berwynite. He witnessed the maiden voyage of the famous Zephyr train as it sped through Berwyn. He was a Cub Scout at the Presbyterian Church on 31 st and Home, he moved up to Boy Scout and attended Irving Grammar School where he learned to play the trumpet. Rick took that skill to Morton High School and played in the senior band. In October of 1956 Rick joined the Air Force and was sent to Lackland, Texas Air force basic training. After graduation, he went to Lowry Air Force Base for weapons training in Denver, Colorado. During the Cold War, Rick was sent to France. Eventually he was sent to Bitburg Germany. He was assigned to the 388 Fighter Bomber Wing where he lived “on the flight line” which meant that he lived in the airplane hangar near the airplanes so that he could load special weapons onto F100 Fighter Jets at a moment’s notice In 1960, Rick came back home to his beloved Berwyn. Shortly after his return Rick became Deputy Township Collector. He was a member of the Young Republicans and gained fame as President of the Riverside Drive Improvement Association. Rick was involved in the Houby Day Parade in some capacity throughout its 50 year existence. He ran for and won the position of 3 rd Ward Alderman. He successfully held that job for 26 years. Becoming one of the longest sitting Alderman ever in the city of Berwyn. Rick was a friend to all and will be sorely missed.
