Sergio Hernandez Obituary

Sergio Hernandez took his last breath on this earth on the evening of July 13, 2025. He passed peacefully in hospice care, surrounded by the loving family embrace of his wife, Gloria, all five of his sons, and several of his grandchildren.

Born on February 27, 1954, in Mexico D.F., Sergio was the beloved son of Nicomedes Hernandez and Esther Hernandez Garcia, both of whom preceded him in death. Affectionately known as “Flaco” by his parents and siblings, he was one of six children and is survived by his brothers and sisters: Arturo, Rosa, Raúl, Maria Elena, and Jaime — a family bound by enduring love, memories, and music.

Sergio graduated from Harrison High School in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood and later earned an associate degree in Computer Science. But his education extended far beyond the classroom. Life was his teacher, and he studied it with the soul of an artist and the heart of a servant.

For 30 years, Sergio worked the third shift as a mail handler for the United States Postal Service. Yet, even after long nights at the sorting floor, he made time — time to drive his parents and in-laws to appointments, to walk his children and grandchildren to school, to sit in the stands of a baseball game or school play, tired but beaming with pride.

He was married to the love of his life, Gloria Hernandez Muñiz, for 56 faithful years — a partnership rooted in laughter, music, and enduring devotion. Together they raised five sons: Sergio Jr. and his wife Alejandra Ibáñez, Sean, Eric, Marlon and his wife Cathy Riggle, and Christopher and his wife Maria Lopez. His greatest joy was his growing family — grandchildren Estrella, Eric, Ethan, Matias, Emiliano, Khalil, Joaquin, Naima, Maya, CJ, Emma, and Miles — each of whom carries a spark of his spirit.

Sergio was more than a father, husband, or postal worker — he was an artist of many languages. An extraordinary rock drummer, he brought rhythm to the world through bands like Bandolero, Masterbeats, Screaming at Alice, and LFT. He was also a painter and an avid reader. But more than anything, he loved talking — especially about art and music. In the comfort of his living room, surrounded by family or visiting friends, he could talk for hours about the albums he loved, the bands he played in, and the ideas that stirred his creative mind. Conversation was his canvas, and those close to him will always remember the way his voice animated the stories he told and the passions he shared.

A man of quiet faith, Sergio was a devoted Catholic and longtime parishioner of St. Odilo Church in Berwyn. His life was a prayer in motion — lived through acts of kindness, patience, and love.

He is remembered as a generous, loving, creative, and kind son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He showed up — always — and gave everything he had, even when tired, even when unasked. The beat he played in life reverberates and lives in the hearts of all the family and friends whose lives he touched and who were blessed to know him.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 20th, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 3117 S. Oak Park Avenue, Berwyn, IL.
Funeral Mass will take place Monday, July 21st, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Odilo Church, 2244 East Avenue, Berwyn, IL.
Burial will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1400 S. Wolf Rd., Hillside, IL, at 11 a.m.
