Sonja Hamilton Obituary

Sonja “Tangie” Hamilton, 62, passed away on February 16, 2026.

Born on October 2, 1963, Sonja was a woman defined by strength, warmth, and an unforgettable smile framed by rosy cheeks. Affectionately called “Tangie,” a name given to her years ago, she carried that same sweetness and light throughout her life.

Sonja dedicated much of her career as a Certified Coding Specialist at Jackson Park Hospital and also served at South Shore Hospital for several years. She took pride in her work and quietly helped more people than most would ever know.

She was the strongest woman her children have ever known — protective to her core. All she ever wanted was for everyone to get along and for those she loved to be safe. Whether shielding her family from the world or from what the world could bring, she lived her life in protection of others.

Sonja had a love for movies and musicals, and when Michael Jackson’s “Dancing Machine” played, she would joyfully break into the robot without hesitation. The casino was one of her favorite places — not just for the jackpots, but for the lights and excitement of the moment.

She was deeply loving toward her children and cherished her nieces and nephews just the same. She leaves behind her beloved children, one grandson, her brothers Clenard Chillers and Johnathan Hamilton, her sister Carmella Hamilton, along with a host of family and friends who will forever carry her memory.

Sonja often quoted a familiar line that perfectly reflected her heart:  “Can’t we all just get along?”  Though it may have been a simple phrase, it was truly how she lived — hoping for peace, unity, and understanding.  A private cremation will take place, with a balloon release to be held at a later date in her honor.  Her love, strength, and protection remain with us always.

We love you Sonja!!
