Waltraud ‘Rose’ Smith, age 93, passed away peacefully on October 23rd. Rose was born on February 14, 1932 in Augsburg, Germany. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Carl, her brother Heinz, and her sister Marianne. Rose has two sons – Steve (Gayle) and Rick (Hella), four grandchildren – Brandon, Kristen (Keil), Eli and Kyle – and a brand new first Great Granddaughter, Clara.
Rose met Carl in Germany. They married, and immediately moved to the United States – where they built their first home in Battle Creek, Michigan. After several years in the US, Rose convinced Carl to move back to Germany, where Carl worked with the US Armed Forces European Command. Rose and Carl remained in Germany for 17 years before settling back in the United States. They stayed in the US for the remainder of their lives.
Rose was an avid bridge player – and Bridge provided Rose with endless hours of joy and many valued friends. Rose also enjoyed traveling – visiting Italy, France, Holland, England, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and Africa. She was very outgoing and loved people, and she had many strong, long-term friendships. Rose was also an excellent cook. Rose dearly loved her family, and always worked hard to help and protect her children and grandchildren.
